In Mariupol the Greek Square was solemnly opened. The event was dedicated to celebration the 240th anniversary of the city on September 29th.
A gift to the residents of the city was made by the family of the Greek philanthropist Pantelis Boumbouras.
Reconstruction and improvement of the Greek Square began in September 2017. Construction work cost the philanthropist more than 12 million hryvnia.
Construction company “GEFEST” acted as a contractor.
Previously, this square was called Administrative. However, after the local government supported the initiative of Pantelis Boumbouras regarding the reconstruction and improvement, the square was renamed as Greek.
“Every time I come to Mariupol, I feel great joy. Wonderful people live here. And I am glad that I can help this city and its citizens. The Greek square is not only a gift for the anniversary of Mariupol, but also a tribute and memory to those Greeks who lived here and continue to live. We must remember the history of our people and, if possible, make a personal contribution to the development of future generations. I am grateful to everyone who has made efforts so that the Greek Square could appear in this beautiful sunny city” said Pantelis Boumbouras in his speech.
In gratitude, the mayor of Mariupol, Vadim Boychenko, presented Pantelis Boumbouras with the honorary award “For Services to the City”.
The Greek Square in Mariupol is one of the socially significant construction projects of the charitable organization “Boumbouras Foundation”.
Its total area is 2.45 hectares.
As a result of reconstruction and improvement, the builders replaced 9.5 thousand square meters of hard pavement, built a cycle track, a light-dynamic fountain, installed benches, garbage bins and modern park lighting.
In addition, the monument of the famous artist Arkhip Kuinji was reconstructed.
It is worth noting that the philanthropist Pantelis Boumbouras has also financed the construction of the Greek square in the village of Maloyanisol, Donetsk region. Its opening took place in 2017. There is a similar tourist attraction in Odessa.
